From Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger at ABC 13 - WSET:
TUESDAY MORNING: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY
• Here’s the updated map of the Winter Weather Advisory—this now includes Lynchburg and Appomattox Counties and a few Southside counties. This is NOT a major Winter Storm for us.
• No changes to the forecast—even though Lynchburg is under the Winter Weather Advisory, the heaviest wintry precip will be west of LYH and west of US Highway 29.
• Typically, we see lots of 2-hour school delays during a Winter Weather Advisory. I could see a few cancellations west where precip is more icy.
• Rain and freezing rain begin between midnight and 6am Tuesday. All locations will be “wet” at Tuesday sunrise. Ice increases west.
• Overall, "regular rain" will be the most common precip type after sunrise in Central and Southside Virginia, though icy potential remains in any spot at 32 degrees.
• Many 0.5" to 1" rain totals-- we are getting a good soaking of cold rain!
• Sometimes in this type of set up, I’ve seen temperatures in the 32 to 34 range across Lynchburg while Appomattox County and Campbell County is 30 to 32.
• Once the temperature rises above 32F at your location, you’ll remain above freezing for the rest of Tuesday.
• Many locations in Central and Southside Virginia will be warmer than 32 after 9am, if not before.
