Gleaning For The World will be at Sam's Club in Lynchburg this Thursday and Friday to collect supplies and donations to help local veterans as well as those affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.

Supplies and donations can be dropped off Thursday, November 6 and Friday, November 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day at the Sam’s Club Parking Lot on Wards Rd. in Lynchburg

“We feel strongly that we must do all we can for the people of Jamaica, as well as for our veterans,” said Jeane Smiley-Mason, president of Gleaning For The World.

The historic Category 5 hurricane made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, leaving widespread destruction.

In addition, GFTW is in the middle of a month-long Veterans collection campaign for personal use items and monetary donations.

Veterans make up over 10% of Virginia’s population, and thousands face challenges related to housing, healthcare, and poverty. Nearly 5% of Virginia’s veterans live below the poverty line, according to James McLaughlin, Gleaning’s Director of Disaster Response and Military Assistance Liaison.

Through partnerships with the Salem VA Medical Center, veteran associations, and local councils, Gleaning provides year-round support for veterans across the Commonwealth.

The public is invited to drop off donations of supplies, cash, or checks during the collection event.

Financial contributions can also be made online at gleaningcharity.org, mailed to GFTW, P.O. Box 645, Concord, VA 24538, or made by phone at 434-993-3600.
