Races to Watch in Virginia on Election Day 2021

Virginians go to the polls on Tuesday to elect a Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and members of the House of Delegates.

There are also many local races for county Board of Supervisors and School Boards, as well as sales tax referendums in the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County.

Amherst County voters will decide on whether to allow pari-mutuel wagering in the county.

The Virginia Department of Elections will also be reporting on Election Night results from around the state.

Here are some key races (information from ABC 13 - WSET) :

Governor:

The nominees are Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin.

McAuliffe served as governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018, while Youngkin is a successful businessman.

Lieutenant governor:

The nominees, Democrat Hala Ayala and Republican Winsome Sears, will both make history for the state of Virginia.

No matter who wins, they'll become the Commonwealth's first female lieutenant governor, and the first woman of color to hold a statewide office in Virginia.

Attorney General:

Democrat Mark Herring will fight to keep his seat against Republican Jason Miyares.

Danville sales tax referendum:

The 1% sales tax referendum will be used to improve and renovate schools in the city.

Pittsylvania County sales tax referendum:

The 1% sales tax referendum will go towards school building repairs and additions.

Amherst gaming referendum:

If passed, Rosie's Gaming Emporium will come to Seminole Plaza in Madison Heights.

House of Delegates District 12:

The race between Democrat incumbent Chris Hurst and Republican Jason Ballard has been one to watch.

Hurst is a former news reporter and anchor who has served as delegate for the district for one term.

Jason Ballard is new to the political scene. He served in the military, and is a small business owner of a law firm.
