Roanoke officials say a dam safety engineer is monitoring the situation at the Spring Valley Dam. As of now, an inspection shows that the dam is holding up, but the situation will continue to be monitored.
Thirteen homes in the Spring Valley Dam area were evacuated about 2:00 this morning.
Roanoke Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Trevor Shannon says an additional 60 structures in Southeast Roanoke have been evacuated "out of an abundance of caution." This includes a daycare center near Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the Ramada Inn on Franklin Rd.
Shannon says that overnight, Roanoke Fire-EMS had to rescue six occupants from three vehicles caught in high water. Roanoke City officials remind motorists not to drive around barricades on closed roads.
The Roanoke River is expected to crest this afternoon at 16 feet, which is major flood stage.
Chief Shannon says his department is continuing to monitor flood prone areas in the city, but encourages Roanoke residents to monitor their personal situation.
