SNL’s Kate McKinnon Honors 'Real-Life Superhero' Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Kate McKinnon remembered the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a touching tribute.

The Bombshell actress, who is popularly known for playing the Supreme Court Justice on Saturday Night Live, hailed the Supreme Court justice as a “real-life superhero.”

“For so many of us, Justice Ginsburg was a real-life superhero: a beacon of hope, a warrior for justice, a robed crusader who saved the day time and again," McKinnon told TODAY in a statement of the prolific legal icon, who passed away Friday (September 18) at aged 87. “Playing her on 'SNL' was a profound joy because I could always feel the overwhelming love and gratitude that the audience had for her.”

“It was one of the great honors of my life to meet Justice Ginsburg, to shake her hand, and to thank her for her lifetime of service to this country,” McKinnon added, recalling the starstruck moment she crossed paths with Ginsburg at last year’s Off-Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof.

Since premiering her Ginsburg persona on SNL in February 2015, McKinnon has impersonated the cultural myriad times on the show’s Weekend Update segment.

Ginsburg died from complications of metastatic pancreas cancer surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, D.C. She is survived by her daughter, Jane, and her son, James. Her husband of 56 years, Martin, died in 2010.
